Newbie and envelope follower

Newbie and envelope follower

2001-10-12 by Robert van der Kamp

Hi all,

My name is Robert van der Kamp and I'm a hardware modular newbie.
I do have a Nord Modular, btw, and love it.

After some research on the net I learned that MOTM modules were
the one to go for (of course).

Although I want to assemble a complete modular in the end, my first
few modules should allow me to process audio from loops, synths and
stuff. So I'm thinking filters, and eh... more filters.

Maybe I misread the specs of the available MOTM modules, or maybe
there's one in the pipeline, but does MOTM have a envelope follower
module? I want to modulate those filters based on the level of the audio.

How do you guys do that? Any tips?

And could anyone suggest a nice set of modules to start with?

Thanks,
Robert

Welcome, and you are among friends (several N**d users here).

First there is an Envelope Follower in design. It will be out early next
year, probably in Feb. The companion
Triple Preamp will be shown at NAMM in mid-Jan.

The first thing you need is a MOTM-410 Triple Resonant filter. Go to
www.synthtech.com/news
and listen to Dave Fulton's demos, and then Charles Stella's. MOTM-410 city.

And of course a MOTM-900 Power Supply.

Then, I'd get a MOTM-420 VCF and a MOTM-850 Pedal Interface (then buy a
Roland or Yamaha footpedal).
That way, you can mangle the filter easily and cheaply with the pedal.

Next, get a MOTM-440 VCF and a MOTM-320 LFO.

After these, you are hopelessly addicted and there's no turning back.

I concur, I also arrived here via the Nerd. There have been rumours
of three more MOTM filters on the horizon (SEM, CS-80, transistor
ladder). I don't recall when these will be available.

I came to MOTM via the Nord as well... but after a short exposure, I
realized I much perferred the interface of the MOTM, and left the Nord
behind. It was a great tool, though.

Robert, welcome! and prepare for serious addiction!

You are indeed correct - MOTM is the way to go. :) Paul already hit the
nail on the head, but I'll give my 2 cents anyway.

Buy the 900 Power Supply and 410 Filter modules, and build the 900 first
(you need it to run all powered MOTM modules) then build the 410. You'll
fall in love with this module and will *immediately* want a second one!
But, buy the 420 VCF next along with either the 850 Pedal Interface or the
320 LFO (or both!). After that, the 440 LPF.

By this point, you'll be hawking everything you own (including the Nord)
cause you'll have the "gotta-get-me-some-more-MOTM" disease.

George

Hint: Make sure you have a good temp controlled soldering iron - like a
Weller WTCPT.

Hello Robert, and welcome!

A 410 is a must-have first module. It has 3 formant-tuned filters
driven by two LFOs. Really complex phaser-like effects and round
fat tone.

I really love the 420. It has a very distinctive voice, low pass,
band pass, and high pass mode. That would be my second choice, but
note that it is a 2-pole filter!

The next thing I would get is the 440. 4-pole but not moog-
sounding. It, too, has a unique voice plus voltage control of
resonance!

From there, the sky's the limit.

A slight correction - the 420 has notch instead of bandpass.

(I apologize if this makes it to the list more than once - having problems
