soldering from the top

2001-10-01 by bleeped

hi there.

i'm about to do a little resistor swapping surgery on my 420s and would
rather not disassemble the whole thing to do this... paul is of the
opinion that you can just clip the old one out and solder the new straight
in. would that mean pre-filling the hole w/solder, then heating the hole
and lead and sticking it in that way?

thanks for any advice...

bleep.
out.

I don't know if these are the NASA certified techniques, but one way is to
clip the leads off close to the resistor, leaving the lead protruding from
the board, and solder the new resistor to the leads. The other way I've
tried is to heat the pads and gently pull the resistor out, followed by
the solder sucker. You can then insert the resistor into the pads and
solder from the top side. Clip the leads short first. This works ok on
high quality boards like the MOTM's, but be very careful on boards of
lesser quality.

1) clip out old part, as close to the body as possible.
2) apply iron to pad/lead poking out. Snatch lead out with pliers.
3) use solder wick to remove solder from hole
4) bend resistor leads, clip off below bend radius (not TOO close)
5) insert part. solder lightly to top pads
