500 series

2001-09-06 by Paul Schreiber

Several have asked "Why is the 500 series not subscription?"

Well, the though was these are not 'mainstream' modules. These are designed
for specific types of sound.
Maybe the "subbers" will want them anyway :)

Since I'm tired of getting blasted for not being "weird enough" I thought
I'd do something about it. Wiard
has it's Wogglebug (I listened to the demos, laughed my *** off. This is
desired??!?). So I'm cooking up
COMPLETELY NEW, NEVER SEEN BEFORE modules. I don't even know if they are
"musically useful".
As most of you know, this has been my #1 goal with MOTM: to make modules
that are USEFUL.

R&D takes a LONG time. R&D time is 'taken away' from filling orders. This is
why I put in 18 hour days, 7 days
a week for the last 3 years. With NAMM coming up, my goal is to first
DEVELOP the new modules, not to pressure
myself to offer them for sale. It's a vicious cycle: I offer module X, which
then I get 60 orders to fill, which means
I can't them work on Y and Z because I have to ship Xs. I am lucky to have
talented folks as customers (I screen
my customers carefully! HA!) that I can 'farm out' some of the R&D.

So, in a way I am a victim of my own success. If sales were 2 to 3X, I could
have a 'real' business with fancy offices
and labs and a real copy machine. The reality is that the profit margin is
low (contrary to popular belief) and so
I must limp along. I am trying to increase the speed of the limp.

So relax, patch up some stuff, and wait for your CD to get there (sent 45
yesterday, 45 more today).

I definitely do, I got into Analog synths back in the early seventies
just to make unique sounds whether musical or not.

I, for one, will find a use for just about any sound generator/mangler.

There's no urgency here. I'll be happy if another module is never produced.
We already have more than the "pioneers" had.

I'd be willing to bet that most subscribers would want the 500's as
well. I mean, if this list is any representation of the whole
subscriber community, we're not a particularly mainstream bunch...

I think that a lot of us use the MOTM specifically for the more
bizarroworld end of synthesis. Not that MOTM doesn't make a terrific
conventional synth by any means, I've been patching some really nice
bass sounds using the 440 lately. In fact, you could probably make a
really kickass monosynth from boards you've already designed, and not
having heard the Moog unit, I'd still bet yours would be the better
unit (and probably cheaper).

So don't worry about being musically useful. We'll make some music
with whatever you put out (perhaps with a pretty liberal definition
of the word "music"). I like being challenged to figure out how to
use a new module. For instance, I had no idea how I'd use a MiniWave
based on the descriptions from Wiard and Blacet. But I knew Grant and
John well enough to trust that it would be something cool, and got
one. Same with the Dark Star. And I trust your designs enough to know
that if you think a module's interesting, I will too! I know that
when I heard the 6-way ringmod demo, I was hearing sounds that I
wanted to make!

Could not agree more! That's what's its all about - unleash the
floodgates and someone will find a unique application to use/abuse
the design.

That's totally the reason I went the modular route (plus the
immediacy of it) and I'd bet alot of other people on the list would
agree. If all I wanted was a standard selection of modules I'd have
decided on a simple monosynth with patch storage capabilities - much
smaller, much less expensive, and, arguably, more convenient. I'm
not saying I don't think some of the current modules don't have
unique features - I think they do. I'm just stating that you've got
a talented lot of thinkers w/ a different perspective on things and
whatever you throw at us we'll make the most of.

I do understand producing the standard lot from a marketing/sales
perspective but if we got one whacked out design for every 4 standard
modules I think we'd all be happy.

Viva MOTM and the MOTM Compatible family...
