Paul's DIY Advice

Paul's DIY Advice

2001-08-16 by jpotter@it.rjf.com

Man - I just pulled out a PAIA Fatman I started probably 2 years ago
and put away unfinished. Comparing the quality of my soldering on
the MOTMs using the Weller WTCPT to the PAIA w/ a cheap $20 Radio
Shack iron is embarrasing. Pick heaps of misformed solder and shiny
solder flux splashes all over the board.

So anyway - the purpose of this note is to let anyone considering a
better soldering iron and better solder know that, yes, it's well
worth it. It's certainly not that my soldering skills have gotten
that much better (although, they certainly have improved) - I haven't
had that much experience. Just 1/3 of a Fatman and 4 MOTM modules.

Thanks for the advice Paul.

JP

I can ID with JP on this. Not that I'm an expert solderer (Paul S. gave
me a C- (if I remember correctly) on one of my first kits). Switching to
a good soldering iron helped me out considerably; less frustrating, better
solder joints (ok, I'm probably up to a C+ on Paul's scale), faster
assembly - well worth the expense. Jeff
