Where does the 101 Noise/S&H module sit on the difficulty scale? The MOTM website doesn't specify. Thanks, John

I would say medium to medium-hard. I've built 16 modules, but I am not a skilled EE type. The 101 has a mix of a substantial part number and some wiring, plus a calibration. You get the gammet with this kit. But if you take slow and methodical you will not have a problem. One of the beautiful things about Paul's kits is that he designs things so that screwing up is actually hard. All the ICs face the same way, so do the polarized caps, for example. The instructions are *very* good, so even if you are a beginner, this kit is way do-able. Thanks Mike - I'm coming up w/ a list of modules to order and part of my decision involves difficulty of assembly - Don't want to pick up too many fives right away but then again I don't want 10 Envelopes (well, maybe eventually). I've got things like the PSU, EG, SubOct up in front of things like the LFO, the 410 filter, and the OSC. The information helps - I'll be placing my order next week or maybe the following week. Thanks alot. John --- In motm@y..., "Mike Marsh" <mmarsh@s...> wrote: > I would say medium to medium-hard. I've built 16 modules, but I am > not a skilled EE type. That's cool! My suggested building order would be PSU, EG, and SubOct. This will get you progressively into it. Then the 410 (which is a very cool module on its own!) then dive into the 300. After that, the rest are cake... --- In motm@y..., jpotter2@t... wrote:

Thanks for the advice tomr - but I've got a Frostwave Resonator so I likely won't be adding a 420 (at least initially). Thanks again. I would select your modules purely on what you want, and ignore their level of difficulty. It's much more important to end up with the system that is right for you. The first kit I built was the 320 VC LFO. While sorting out its bazillion axial parts may be tedious, it doesn't require any more skill than any of the other kits. It merely requires patience. From what I can tell, the "difficult" kits simply take longer to build because they have more parts. I wouldn't worry about that. Now that I'm done building my first batch, I actually miss sorting and soldering parts. So consider the longer kits a better entertainment value :) Ironically, the easiest kit, the 800 EG, was the only kit I that didn't work after I assembled it (I pinched a cable). I also had difficulty calibrating the 110 VCA/Ring Mod, even though it is regarded as one of the easier kits to build (I'd ignore the DVM instructions for adjusting the Y-trim). Also, you might want to check the archives -- there is plenty of advice for new builders.

Yep, that's what I was planning on doing - I'm just trying to roughly sketch out in my mind what order I'm going to assemble them in. I'm going to be picking up 8-10 modules at the same time. Just thought I'd work out a couple 1s and 2s before I tackle a 4 or 5. Thanks for the help.
