OMS-410 Kits (added functionalityt for you MOTM-410!)

2001-05-19 by Tentochi

The kits are about half spoken for. If you want one, please send me an
email.

I will be sending out a mailing on Sunday with details on how to pay the
deposit to everyone who showed interest.

I have heard a few people have already pre-orded OMS-410 PCBs from Tony. If
you have done this and would like a kit without the PCB, contact me to work
out an arrangement.

Additionally, all Custom Stooge FP will have all holes drilled. This is
usually NOT the case for Stooge FPs.

The only way currently to obtain a Custom Stooge OMS-410 FP is to purchase a
kit through me.

Cheers!
Todd

I am definitely doing a run of Oakley OMS-410 kits. I am currenly working
out the details.

The kit should include:

* Printed documentation (Tony does not provide this)
* Oakley PCB
* Custom Stooge FP
* Modified Stooge Mounting Bracket (to accomodate 3 pots)
* Solder (2 types, Kester, same as Paul)
* Alco knobs (same as MOTM)
* Switchcraft jacks (same as MOTM)
* Pots (same as MOTM if availability permits)
* Standoffs/mounting hardware for PCB and mounting bracket
* Black FP screws
* Wire (may not be stripped)
* All electronic parts (quality will be at MOTM level when possible)
* USPS Priority Shipping

I don't think I have left anything out.

Tony has given the thumbs up on this project.

Larry and Dave are working with me currently for FPs and brackets.

Tony's switch will not be included, although you could still mod to do
yourself.

The FP layout should remained unchanged from Tony's.

All kits will be numbered.

This is currently a limited run of 20. If I get enough pre-orders, this
number may increase.

Don't forget, you need an MOTM-410 to use the OMS-410. If you don't have
one, buy one from Paul now to avoid the rush.
http://www.synthtech.com/motm/m410

You will need to make a couple of connections to you MOTM-410 for this kit,
although it will not be "modified."

Do NOT buy a PCB from Tony if you are buying this kit. The PCB, as stated
above, is included in the kit.

Info on the OMS-410 can be found at:
http://www.techrepairs.freeserve.co.uk/oms-410.htm

I will not be modifying the kits. All kits are as it. So please don't ask
me to leave out parts to reduce the price.

I already have 2 pre-orders and 1 confirmed order.

I am taking pre-orders now. MO or Paypal only. Email me directly for
complete information. $100 down. The balance, which has yet to be
determined, is due when the kits are ready before I ship. I will have the
total price in the next 2 weeks. I estimate the total to be under $200. A
flat shipping fee for USPS Prioity Mail will be included in the total cost
for North American oders (slightly higher for international orders); there
will be no shipping discounts for multiple kit purchases. In the event that
the kits would not ship, I will refund the full amount you have submitted to
me.

I am estimating that the kits will begin shipping first half of August. It
may take longer if certain parts are not available. It may be quicker if
everything comes together nicely.

I am providing this as a service to the MOTM community the same as Larry and
Dave have been doing. I am NOT doing this to make money.

I am also planning on doing a kit for the OMS-820 when it is released later
this year. It is a companion module to the MOTM-820. Info at:
http://www.synthtech.com/motm/m820

All of the information contained here is subject to change up until the time
that the kits are actually shipped. I will try and submit any changes to
this list.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Cheers!
Todd

Question about MOTM-410 assembly

2001-05-19 by John Broaddus

Hello list,

I'm new to the MOTM kits and am building my first module, the MOTM-410. I
am at the stage where the instructions say to mount the PCB/Bracket assembly
to the front panel and I'm having a very hard time getting the pots to fit
through the front panel holes. Is this typical on this and/or other kits?
I hate to force it too hard but since I haven't built any of these kits I
am wondering if that's what I need to do.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Instead of contacting Paul at this
time I thought I would try the list first.

Thanks for any help!

The fit is can be extremely tight. I've had it happen on a few kits that
I've built too. My solution is to thread the pot into the hole. It will go
in pretty easily that way, and by the time you get to the base of the pot,
you'll cut "threads" into the paint inside the hole and then you'll just
naturally "strip" the threads.

Thanks everyone for your help. I used a small metal file and the pots fit!

Thanks again,

MIDI to CV options

2001-05-20 by John Broaddus

Hello,

I have just finished my first module and it works! I didn't screw anything
up (that I know of). Thanks for the advice for fitting the pots through the
front panel.

I now have a question about MIDI to CV converters. I've read about a few
different options and am wondering what I might be missing if I go with a
more inexpensive model. It seems that the Encore Electronics and Kenton
models are the most fully featured but they are a bit expensive (and I'm
already looking around the house to see what I can sell to get more modules)
so I'm wondering about the JKJ CV-4 or the Oakley Midi/DAC.

What are the advantages/disadvantages? Is it better to hold out for the
more full featured models or could I get along with a less expensive one.

Initially I will only use the converter as CV for processing modules and
won't be controlling VCO's for a few months at the earliest.

Thanks for any advice!

In a word, polyphony.

You get what you pay for, more or less. The Encore has 8 CV outs and
8 Gate outs, for instance. It has other cool features like built in
LFOs, poly assign routines, and kbd zones.

The less expensive ones are typically single channel, and will be
fine for monophonic applications.

If you think you'll grow into a bigger unit, then you have to decide
if it makes sense to invest now or trade up later.
