Ass whippin' administered - FLAT RAILS a reality

2001-05-05 by J. Larry Hendry

Ass whippin' administered at the metal shop today.....
Naw... But I wanted to after he sat on my flat rail
quote for so long.

However, I now have a quote on the 6U length of flat rails. I still have to
see the painter, but I have a good idea what he will charge. So, I am going
to order up flat rails next week. They will be shipping in mid June. They
will have the same lovely black powder coat that Paul has used on his rack
rails. They will be only 6U long. So, you can butt them up for
combinations of 6, 12, 18, 24. The screws that go into the wood will be so
that you can cut them as small as 3U wide if you have that kind of need.

Unlike the custom panel orders, I am NOT asking for orders up front or
payment up front. I just plan to buy a bunch and have them available for
sale whenever someone wants them.

Paul is in on the action, so these are "official" MOTM rails. I am just
taking care of the leg work. The good news is that, I was able to get a
little better quote here than Paul was at his end, so the price per-unit
will be lower than when Paul originally announced expected flat rail prices.
The price of these will be around $7.50 each 6U piece. Originally, the 12U
were priced at $18, so the 12U savings is $3. Of course, you need one for
top and bottom. Shipping will be actual postal cost of shipping. I will
have exact figures after I get these things and see how many to a pound.

If you want the shorter screws, I can supply them too. Paul is sending me
the one's he bought. I will buy more in bulk if that is not enough. I
don't have an exact price for screws yet. But, they will much cheaper that
if you bought just a few yorself, but higher than if you were willing to buy
1000 for yourself.

All, I need to do is decide how many flat rails to order. If you are
interested, please drop me a note and say "I would probably buy X # at that
price. And, maybe, YES or NO, I want you to supply screws. Then I have
some idea if I should order 100 or 1000 of these things and ho many 1000s of
screws to buy. No commitment or order is necessary.

Once I have the finished product, I will put photos at my website and will
post the firm prices. I will send a note to the list to let people know
they are available for sale.

Isn't the magic length 27U? Was this the width of the old Moogs? Or is it
because it is the width of a keyboard?

If not 27U, is there a magic length for many people?

27U = 9 mini-rails (4 1/2 top and bottom)

Cheers!

<<<<

The magic length is 27U for matching a Moog console case. Other
people seem to be gravitating to multiples of 6 - 12, 18, 24. I built
a 26U case but then never used it. The new case I posted pics of is
18U, so that works for me!

Well, 27U is the magic length for my Moog cabinet. You can also make it 26U if you
want thicker end cheeks. Real Moog cabinets are somewhere in between because a
single Moog module is ~2" wide.
