OT : Connector Search Tip

2001-05-05 by bruce@sigalarm.com

Sorry to go off topic, but the 'tron knowledge in this group must be
tapped to find a strange item. If you don't care about interconnects
or such stuff.... DONT READ IT!

Ok, I am trying to repair a very strange piece of synth. It would
seem that it is possible to repair it, but to correct a design defect
the best thing might be to employ a ribbon cable to connect 2 pairs of
DIP sockets, both wide bodies (.600) one being 24 pins the other 40.
So far I have only been able to find 3M that make ribbon cables with
DIP connector sockets on the end. That would be fine but no one seems
to have them.

Any suggestions on where to look? Other manufactures?

Thanks a bunch, sorry for the off topic.

It is getting hard to find ribbon cable with connectors already
installed. If you don't turn anything up, consider buying the cable
and connectors separately, and mounting them yourself.

It sounds daunting, but if you have a vise with good flat jaws, you
can carefully place the ribbon between the two halves of the
connector, and place a shim of the correct size between the pins to
protect them from the jaws. Squeeze gently until the connector halves
snap together. Check your results with a multimeter to make sure the
cable doesn't have shorts on adjacent conductors. If so, cut the end
off, pry the connector apart and try again. It's all in the initial
placement of the ribbon into the connector.

Not fun, but not impossible either. It's a useful technique to
cultivate.
