My case can beat up your case - the finale!

My case can beat up your case - the finale!

2001-05-04 by mate_stubb@yahoo.com

I have FINALLY finished my "Son of T.O.N.T.O." case, as Paul calls
it. I refer to it immodestly as the Synth of Doom. Clearly it's not
as studly as the Fist of God, but not bad. I'm REALLY pleased with
the design now that it's done. I don't find reaching up slightly to
be a hassle, since I don't have to stretch.

This case is filled, and I have a second one already cut out for my
sequencers. However, it took so long to build just the first one that
I'm going to chill, play it for a change, and just gaze at it.

Now the only thing left is module separators.

I'll get some more details up on my site showing the power supply
distribution setup next week or so.

In the meantime, here are some images. They range from 100k to 240k,
sorry about that.

Are you taking commissions for building more of these?

Wow! And you're going to build a second one!? You'll need to build a
special room for them, with some cool lighting and a hidden sound system!

<<<<

To complete this project, I've already had to buy:
1. a 10" Delta table saw
2. a Porter Cable plate joiner (biscuit cutter)
3. a DeWalt orbital sander (my old one was crap)
4. a DeWalt orbital jig saw (my old one fell apart)
5. a gigantic Delta shop vac
6. a big Delta air cleaner (mounts on the rafters, wife wouldn't put
up with the dust in the air)

I already had a drill press and band saw, fortunately...

Lessee, that's over $1k just for new tools. The room and sound system
are gonna have to wait for awhile!

Dave,

That is a truly beautiful system! I'm curious to know if you have any problems with
the interaction of the knobs and patch cords between the two top rows, the angle
looks interesting. I also wonder if you will have more dust buildup on the lower
row. I've found that the vertical mounting tends to only allow dust to settle on
the knobs which is either kept clean via use or is easier to clean than panels.

<<<<

No, no problems. I chose the angle by doing experiments ahead of time
with a specific eye to avoiding unwanted interaction. Since there is
an angle, the jack of course leans closer to the knob below than in a
straight cabinet. But the angle is gentle enough that it doesn't
interfere with tweaking.

<<<<

I keep a feather duster handy and run it over all my gear panels
every few days. I have many control surfaces that are a lot more
nearly horizontal than the bottom row of the MOTM.
