waaaay ot--hot wires

2001-03-20 by klem klemmingberg

Howdy--
I want to ignite flash paper electrically--from some aa batteries. I'm thinking
very thin wire would heat up well, but i'm not sure if there's some trick to getting wire
extra hot. Or is there some sort of electronic component that would do the trick for me?
Please reply off list.

When I used to rock n' roll with a band which used a lot of pyro, we
built flash pots which were nothing more than 2 screw terminals with
an AC cord attached. Instead of buying special trigger wire, we would
make our own by taking zip wire and unravelling it to use a single
strand of thin copper. The 120v was enough to pop it every time,
without blowing breakers. Of course, you can fry yourself if you wire
it up and it's still plugged in. Dangerous!

just not as many times. :)

Har! I knew better than to compete with Larry on electricity
stories...

I'll just shut up before I tell the one about the black powder cannon
we used to set off with the flash pots to get a bigger boom, which
sent a chair seat across the club in flames one night...

You want nicrome wire. It used to be sold a lot for model rocket engine igniters. Of course, you could just use model rocket engine igniters. Check your hobby shop.. You can light them off 3 or 4 "D" cells quite easily. I never tried AA, but seems reasonable, just not as many times. :)

Well, if batteries had not been specified, I could show you how to start a
fire with wires. We have this thing we do at work where we intentionally
start 7200 volt fires (limited current) to show people what happens when you
touch power lines. Let's say I can cook two hot dogs much faster than a
microwave. :)

Get outta here, I thought my old band was the only ones crazy enough to
try that. BTW, another good squencer application ;-)
