OK, the no demand thing makes sence. But I suppose the real question is:
for people like us, who are currently dependant on discrete parts, what will
we be using in 10 years?

Oh hell. I think I'd better start learning DSP code. Maybe in 10 years
we'll finally have digital technology able to semi-acurately replicate an
op-amp. ;)

old surplus DIPs. Yep, the LM324N becomes as rare as a CEM3310 :)
(sorry, this is pick on John Blacet Day)

No DIPs

2001-03-09 by Paul Schreiber

No demand. Show me a single DIP IC in:

cell phone
pager
computer
DVD player
Playstation
Gameboy
X-Box
Cisco Router
VCR

Today, only 8% of all IC's shipped are in DIP. And that number drops 20%
every year.

EPROMs and other memory make up over 90% of THAT total.

Now for the good news: the average MTBF (mean time between failures) on
modern processed ICs
(ie ICs made after 1995) are like 25 YEARS.

Best thing to keep MOTM happy: use a GOOD SURGE supperssor (acts like a
Serge suppressor, too!)

There is such a huge installed base of thru-hole parts that it will be slow
and gradual, but
like the VESA slot, ISA slot and the 540MB hard drive in PCs,
going...going...gone!!

Folks, NOW IS THE BEST TIME for DIY!! Get going while the getting is good!

Don't worry just yet. Military contracts to maintain stuff through like
year 2035 will assure us of a lot of DIP parts for years to come.
