Soldering help requested...

2001-03-09 by Tentochi

I am working on adapting several non-MOTM kits to the MOTM format.

I now have several single-sided PCBs to stuff and solder. I only have
experience (in the past 20 years) soldering double-sided boards.

What special precautions should be taken when soldering single-sided boards?
Do I still solder from the back of the board?

Thanks!
Todd

No special precautions necessary. You will find that single sided
boards don't solder quite as easily as double sided, because there is
no plating in the holes to encourage the solder to draw in.

So just keep your tip clean, tinned, and in good condition. Go for it!

Single-sided boards are easy to work with, just note that there will be
no capillary action of the solder flowing up into the hole to form a nice
bead on the top side of the board as happens with plated-through holes.
Solder parts on the bottom ("copper") side of the after pushing their
leads through from the top side much like multilayer board stuffing.
