420 happiness, etc

420 happiness, etc

1999-07-26 by Christopher Jeris

Just finished the first 420 and tried it out today. As everyone else has
said, *WOW*. I think my ears are bleeding. I found it actually more
powerful as a high-pass than a low-pass filter, although maybe I just
haven't figured out how to use the low-pass mode yet. I have a couple
patches to submit, nothing special:

CHEESY TECHNO PATCH
Requires:  100 110 120 300x2 420 800x2 940 and a MIDI/CV (I have a PAiA
9700). An arpeggiator is nice - I used a Yamaha AN1x. This one sounds
like a bass patch but scales well to the upper octaves too.

Setup: (Parameters not mentioned are not relevant.)
100  - OUT into 800a TRIG (Larry's LFO dodge)
       SPEED 9.0; HOLD
110  - CV from 940 mult b (800b + OUT); IN from 420 OUT;
       VCA OUT into mixer
       CV MOD 10.0; GAIN 0
120  - A IN from 300a SAW; B IN from 300b SAW; OUTPUT into 420 IN 1
       A IN 7.1; B IN 9.8; MIX A NORM; MIX B NORM; MODE CROSS
       SUB 1 6.5; SUB 2 7.7; SUB 3 3.3; SUB 4 2.8
300a - 1V/OCT from 940 mult a (MIDI/CV pitch out); FM1 from 940 mult b
       (800b + OUT); SAW into 120 A IN
       COARSE/FINE tuned 1 octave above true; FM1 LIN, DC, 0.4
300b - 1V/OCT from 940 mult a (MIDI/CV pitch out); FM2 from 800a + OUT;
       SAW into 120 B IN
       COARSE/FINE tuned true and detuned a bit; FM2 0.2
420  - 1V/OCT from 940 mult a (MIDI/CV pitch out); FM1 from 940 mult b
       (800b + OUT); IN 1 from 120 OUTPUT; OUT into 110 IN
       FREQ 3.8; FM1 -2.2; MODE HP; RES 6.6; IN 1 10.0
800a - TRIG from 100 OUT; + OUT into 300b FM2
       ATTACK 2.7; DECAY 2.7
800b - GATE from MIDI/CV gate out; TRIG from MIDI/CV trigger out;
       + OUT into 940 mult b
       ATTACK 1.4; DECAY 3.3; SUSTAIN 5.9; RELEASE 1.8
940  - mult a carries 1V/oct; mult b carries 800b + OUT

INDUSTRIAL VOCAL PATCH
Requires:  110 120 300 and a MIDI/CV

Setup: (Parameters not mentioned are not relevant.)
110  - X IN from mic preamp (a mixer post-preamp channel insert);
       Y IN from 300 SINE; RING MOD OUT into 120 A IN
       UNBAL 0.0; X AC; Y AC; X LEVEL 10.0; Y LEVEL 5.0
120 - A IN from 110 RING MOD OUT; OUTPUT into mixer
       A IN 10.0; MIX A NORM; MODE SUB; SUB 1 1.3; SUB 2 2.3;
       SUB 3 0.7; SUB 4 0.5
300  - 1V/OCT from MIDI/CV pitch out; SINE into 110 Y IN
       COARSE/FINE tuned true

Demo files for both these patches are recorded and I will submit them to
Paul as soon as I figure out how to use my roommate's mp3 encoder.

The biggest problem with MOTM is, I'm losing the ability to enjoy my AN1x.
It sounds pretty good for DSP-analog, but it's just not in the same league
as MOTM. Oh well, 10 notes polyphony takes up a lot of wall rack. :)

peace,
Chris

to Everyone: I have a really good MP3 encoder here. Send WAV files on CD-R
and I can
encode them no problem. Or on a ZIP disk. 16-bit stereo, 44.1Khz sample
rate.

Also:

a) investigating color-coded (by length) custom, *high-end* patch cords.
About $15-$20 ea, but
we are talking Mogami cable/Neutrik plugs. These pups will last 30 years. I
don't expect
to hear back until 2-3 weeks (these folks are s*l*o*w). I will try to get
the best deal I can.

b) Orders received this week by Wed PM will be shippped this week, else no
shipments until Aug. 10th.

c) thought I could get the '410 pcb out by this week but no way. Have to do
a zillion
other things. And the cat barfed all over the new carpet. AND it was 104
degrees all day.

d) I bought 500 LM13600AN chips so no need to worry about our favorite OTA
running out!!
(this OTA is the main reason the '420 sounds the way it does. NOT used in
the upcoming '410.
But will appear later on.........<grin>).

e) I need to re-tool the '800 EG pcb. and I will add a 555 one-shot for ADSR
with Gate. This is
more predictable than the tap off Q1 collector. I will also add a little
circuit to increase max. attack time
20% and to increase the pot holes so they aren't TOO tight.

Will the 555 circuit and attack increase be mods those of us with older ones
can retro fit?

Will a retrofit be available? How much? When? How hard to install?

No, just use the jumper wire as Dave Bradley has stated.

Since this is a DIY list, how about selling cable kits? Neutrik 1/4"
TRS plugs are only $2.25 each in bulk, so even less for the TS plugs.
And Mogami single pair cable is only $.18-.22 per foot. So for less
than $5 everyone could make their own high quality cables.

Paul, I think I read in the original note that a resistor might be better
here than a jumper wire. If that is true, would you care to recommend a
size?

Thanks,
Larry

Any value from 1K to 4.7K should work.
