VCA's

1999-07-20 by Mark T

Hello all -

How is everyone on the list using the MOTM-110 VCA function?
I only have one, and planned on running it into the patch panel to expand.
Is this a good Idea?

Has anyone tried using the ring mod I/O as a VCA? (mentioned in the manual).

Hey Paul, how soon will we see the single VCA modules?

I hope to have a quad VCA in the MOTM Flood starting in Sept.

Yummy! A QUAD VCA ... now I'll have to figure out how to get 90-degree and
270-degree out-of-phase signals from a single LFO (would I have to use EG's
for this?) for some sick quadrophonic panning ...

Hi Mark,

I'm not sure I understand what you're proposing with patching your VCA "into
the patch panel" -- if you mean to mix the outputs of several sources (say
three VCOs) in a multiple, and then run that signal in to the VCA: I would
like to hear what Paul says about that first.

This technique is called nonlinear mixing in the Alan Strange book
"Electronic Music" and will produce non-harmonic tones (specifically sum and
difference tones) such that the resultant sound is similar to AM. The reason
I'd ask Paul first is that it is generally considered to be bad practice to
run outputs into outputs.

The only reason to not use your RM section as a VCA is that a RM will not
have the dynamic range of a VCA, but in a pinch......

Sounds very cool - I'd like to see a Voltage Controlled Mixer/ VC
Panner someday.
I'm not sure if I've got the right name for it (I guess would be
a multiple VCA summed into a mono or stereo output).

Anyway, I've had a great deal of fun building & playing with my
MOTM gear so far - now if the !@#$%^ post office would just find
my missing 420 I could get all "jiggy wit it".
Even without a filter I've managed to get several patches which
fall under "Wife-B-Gone", you know the ones where she walks into
the room, shakes her head and closes the door on the way
out...pretty fun as long as it temporary.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE selectable exponential/linear response on each amp!
Exponential has such a snappy response when doing percussive stuff!!

Hello all,

Been a while since I've been here - MCSE studies are keepin me too busy!

How is everyone getting around the patching limits of the 110 VCA? I can only guess using multiples, but wouldn't that load down the 110's o/p at some point?

Hey Paul, with all these great modules coming out, are there any plans for a standalone VCA, maybe a 1 unit?

Regards,

Mark Tencza

I'm afraid I don't understand what these problems are. Could you
elaborate...?

There will be a stand-alnoe VCA coming out, that is Lin/Log switchable.

Last time I heard, it was going to be a Quad VCA module.
