My filter works as expected, so you may have wired your switch up wrong (which I've done many times in the past). I also don't understand what your references to FREQ peaking in the middle of travel, and what you mean by the Q and FREQ having to be operated at the same time to "ride on the edge." Again, this is not what I'm experiencing with mine if I understand you correctly. I could post a few simple tests for general operation if you continue to find problems after verifying the correct flying wires. John B.
