Welcome to the list Peter.  I'm glad to see you have a sense of humor. 
That is always helpful on this list IMO.  My $.02 on tools is use what
works best for you.  I found (before MOTM) than my RS quality iron tip just
wasn't nice enough.  It was too big and didn't hold it's shape well.  So, I
upgraded.  You will hear lots of differing opinion on irons -- all probably
good.  I spent about $25 on a temp adjustable GC brand at the electronics
store and it has served me well for about 3 years.  Others have spent more.
 As long as the tip is small enough and the temp isn't too hot, it's
whatever works for you.  It is my opinion that you will want a good digital
voltmeter.  I happen to like Fluke and have a couple of them.  But, there
is some design engineer on the list that used to work for RS that says one
of their high end meters is pretty good (this is the part where your sense
of humor should kick in).
