Problems with the PAiA VCA

2000-03-14 by J. Larry Hendry

An excerpt from synth-diy, for those of you that do not describe. In the
world of kits, you have MOTM and then the other guys.... the names have
been removed to protect the innocent.

-------------------------------------
I just assembled the PAIA VCA and have been experiencing
a couple of problems. Have any of you built this yet? I have
been having the following problems if anyone has any
suggestions feel free to let me know.

1) The noise (L out) seems to only give me a deep hum?
Does not sound like white noise.
2) Seems the R vca channel is much louder than the L
channel. Even with pan turned all the way to the left
I can still here the R channel. The left channel seems
    to work normally.
3) The A channel does not seems to work at All? no matter
what I do I get nothing from A out?
4) I have the midi2CV and the VCF kit also it seems the
vca picks up the modulation of the vcf ? I hear the noise
from the L channel modulate in sync with VCF modulation.
This stops if I switch the modulator off on the VCF.
-----------------------------------------

Also I am working on the PAIA VCA too. The hum you hear on
the L channel is from the Midi2CV8 power's supply from the
positive rail. It is delivering about 12.04 VDC and 1.4 vac rms.
I believe the power supply should have been a fullwave rectifier
instead of half-wave. Also the noise generator products too low
of signal source to be effective.
-------------------------------------------------

interesting: I'm also working on the 9710, but the kit was
missing several resistors, *both* pcb mounted trim pots, one of
the matched trannies was broken/unusable, etc....it would
otherwise be finished right now (i didn't have the missing parts
on my bench, and i refused to go out and buy them for
basic headstrong reasons.....)

i will be using blacets 15V ps; i hope i wont get the problems
stated here. i've been using it with the m2cv8 and several
homemade modules with no problems.
