O.K. so I decided to try with a couple of vca to make a panning patch which went as follows. 

300 saw output to multiple to 2 different vca's.

320 sine out to multiple.

320 from multiple 1 to vca 1 cv input

320 from multiple 2 to 830 mixer input 2 attenuator negative 5 output to vca 2 cv input.

vca 1 out to left.

vca 2 out to right.

...and here is where i realize that as the sine wave from the 320 is crossing zero the volume of each vca is at half. 

Is there a simple method to achieve panning that I might a have missed.
