I'm probably going to get beat for this by other people on the list, but I use and am very happy with my Rat Shack 40W Pencil Iron and 40W De-soldering Iron. The soldering Iron runs about US$8.00 and the de-soldering iron is about US$11.00. I found that the tips last about 6 months for the soldering iron and a year or so for the de-soldering iron.... unless of course you have a not bright moment and leave it plugged in over night.....

i've assembled electronic kits (non-audio), but i've never ordered components from mouser or setup a proper workbench. i don't own a decent soldering iron. although i've watched plenty of youtube and IPC videos on soldering & desoldering every conceivable component, somehow i feel like i'm still missing something. thanks for asking all the questions i haven't gotten around to asking myself.

This made it easier to decide how I should split up the resistors. By the way, I wrote in big all the resistances with a permanent marker to make it easier to see right away.I got these plastic drawers and Big Lots.
