Really??  I wonder if that has to do with the increased availably of
percussion modules, and the decline of hardware samplers.  A
hardware sampler with individual outs can be used to trigger analogue
drum synths, and is velocity sensitive, just like a TR-707.  Also, as
a 707 is all digital, its function as a sound module could be
replaced with a hardware sampler.  Nowadays, no one makes hardware
samplers (except Akai MPC units) and the ones that were made are no
longer supported via software.

It also works in reality.  The issue with TR-606's is that people
keep buy them to hack them apart thinking they can somehow mod the
poor little things into an 808.
