related to ambient synthesis.  Maybe you've heard of the Buddha Machine 
(reportedly Brian Eno bought eight of them):

This also caught my attention, a work by Robert Henke:  Laying Buddha, 
which is a digitally processed remix of lots of Buddha Machine tracks.
