When the zener diode in a cable was first mentioned, the person who inquired 
about this sounded as if he didn't trust the diode method.  Why not just tie 
two like resistors together in series , solder one end to ground, one end to 
the incoming gate signal, and tap off the middle for the modified gate.  That 
could be put in the cable to knock the gate down by half or whatever ratio 
you choose.
