I've used all of my different EQs with synths and they all work fine as far
as levels.  Some EQs have level controls, but then again so does the output
on you VCA.  I don't know in particular which ones you might want to stay
away from.  Even my cheap Dod 31 band works fine with synths.  I don't know
what $80 gets you used.  I've seen parametrics that sold for $600 new
selling for dirt cheap, so I can't tell by the used price without knowing
the specific model whether it's a good deal or not.

Well you can get a decent quality EQ without spending a fortune.  You can
buy a good 31 band mono EQ new for $100 to $150 by companies like dbx, Art,
or Samson just to name a few from currently looking at a catalog.  $250 to
$300 gets you two channels and maybe long throw sliders.  The Art's are
constant Q, so the band width doesn't get more narrow the more you boost.
Rane's version of a raised cosine EQ is the DEQ 60 and sells for about $800.
Behringer's DEQ1024 sells for about $150.  Both are stereo.
