It's been I think two years since I started so I'm hardly an expert or 
anything. I remember asking this exact same question. My advice is this: 
start with a small number of modules (say OSC->(ENV->)VCA->VCF->MIX) and 
just play, try using unusual outputs on unusual inputs. Try "missusing" or 
"abusing" modules, like using a filter as an oscillator, or an LFO with 
re-trig as an envelop. You'll start to get a model in your head how to 
design your own sounds. Just remember to play ;)
