a) Use a USB interface. They tend to have better software support as the USB
drivers are easier to write for both XP and OSX. I use an Edirol 2-port thing
from www.zzounds.com that works flawlessly on both Mac and PC.

b) as far as sequencing software goes, it depends on how "deep" you want to go.
You have giant ones (Logic), mid-range (CakeWalk) and the abstract (Numerology).
