Summary
Any fan or collector of vintage synthesizers will love this unique slipcased
set of four softbound booklets covering the what and how-to of electronic
music synthesis, packaged under the title The Synthesizer, 2nd Edition and
published in 1979 by the Roland Corporation. Each 8-1/2 x 11 paperbound,
squareback volume covers a different phase of state-of-the-art (back then!)
music synthesis, giving plenty of examples using Roland synths like the 100M
and the 700. The four books are: A Foundation for Electronic Music. (68
pages) Defines and explains electronic music terms, devoting chapters to
concepts like pitch, loudness, and timbre, explaining how each are dealt
with in music synthesis. Has a fold-out chart of the piano keyboard with its
frequency ranges and relationship to concert instruments. Practical
Synthesis for Electronic Music, Volume One. (103 pages) Takes the theory of
the first volume and applies it to concrete applications using the 100M
Roland system. Covers basic and advanced patches as well as accessories like
graphic equalizers and the Vocoder, with pictures and how-to's. Practical
Synthesis for Electronic Music, Volume Two. (108 pages) Leading off with a
discussion of the Roland SH-2 synthesizer, this book deals extensively with
string sounds, rhythm, and effects. It concludes with a discussion of
sound-on-sound recording using Boss mixers and reel-to-reel tape recorders.
An appendix presents a score of Schubert's Serenade. Multichannel Recording
for Electronic Music. (48 pages) This volume deals with using tape recorders
and Boss mixers to create multichannel recordings. Beginning with four-track
systems, it describes mixing multiple channels and noise-reduction
techniques. Includes an appendix score of a Haydn serenade. All these
booklets are in a stapled heavy-cardstock slipcase. They are in near-mint
condition, marred only by some very slight scuffing of the slipcase and some
minor finger-oil marks on the backs of the darker-covered booklets. A true
collector's item for fans of the Golden Age of the Synth. Shipping to the
