Thanks for the article.  The gimmick of using a resistor to change the 
taper of a linear pot has been around for a while.  If you refer to 
Electronotes #111, pages 5-6, you will find a short article by me, 
entitled "Warping the Response of a Linear Input Attenuator".  It shows 
how to obtain a taper similiar to an audio taper by adding a resistor to 
a linear pot, exactly as described in the article linked here.  This was 
motivated by a desire to use high quality pots while still on a tight 
budget (which I could do by buying a quantity of 100 or more of the same 
linear type pots to get the price break) and still be able to get 
different taper responses where needed.
