You can spend mad money on direct boxes once you catch the bug, but an inexpensive one that I have found to be quite useful is the Rolls Red Square. It has lots of gain, and can be used for balancing the MOTM's output -- or amplifying a signal going into the MOTM. It's not the cleanest amp I have ever heard. But it does also have this kind of funny exciter circuit that you can switch on as well, which is sometimes useful when injecting something into a VCF. Little Labs makes some really nice DIs.
