Front or back

2003-10-21 by Roger Rossen

My question is this: do I solder on the front of the
pc-board, or on the back? - Robert

You solder on the back. There will be tiny bit of solder 'leaking'
to the top, but that's OK.

I do so hope that we have established what the front and back are -
being that this question was raised at all.
the front has the letters/silkscreens and are where the parts go
into - and the back is where you solder all the little buggers and
wires!

One little trick I do for ICs - which are usually only a pain if you
have to remove them, after a couple of pins have been bent to hold
them in for soldering, is: I solder a single lead from the top while
they are resting comfortably and gravity is holding them down in the
right place - and then I finish them up from the bottom, perhaps 're-
snugging the 1 previously soldered pin if need be, from the bottom.
This makes life alot easier if/when you have to remove the dang
things!

Now you do the same from the bottom, without bending any pins, and
can get real crafty by holding them down with a finger while holding
the solder and iron, and getting them from the bottom, at just the
right angle...and you will soon go mad if you're soldering more than
10 ICs - and I know we all are soldering ALOT more.

I should think that our vast technological developments on this
planet over the last 100 years or so, should develop parts that
solder themselves! And geez (while I'm at it)why can't they make
parts for people like us - and the billion others who make other
kinds of electronic stuff? They need to make pots with 10 inches of
pretinned wire already there instead of the 1/2 inch lead - and
switches to! I mean - MACHINES aren't doing everything are they?

Just a rant in defense of mankind. I just watched "the Matrix
Reloaded" and have "Terminator" on my mind because he is now the
freakin governor of a very silly state!

Ok - here I go again - off into oblivion!

I do hope this helps however - can ya tell I don't get out much
anymore these days?

Happy soldering

Rog
