the algorythms may not be new, but the performance aspect is. People with access to real time computer synthesis will come up with different ways of using their existing tools, which in turn will lead to the development of new tools. There is definietly room for improvement and innovation in the world of laptop music. I've been to many boring concerts. I think real-time re-synthesis using live performers for sound sources has a lot of potential. Also, it seems like there's a a lot of potential working with tunings. It's not a new tool, but it's one that not a lot of people are using.
