MOTM

The "wood" is birch plywood.  No special preparation needed, cheap,
simple to work with.  The cabinet was prepared with Minwax Pre-Stain
conditioner (really brings out the wood grain), stained with Minwax
Colonial Maple stain, then given three coats of (you guessed it) Minwax
Polyurethane.
