This is an interesting point. At what diameter knob does the fine resolution become limited by the potentiometer characteristics rather than the knob size? I know for certain that it is easier to dial in sequencer control voltages on my Synthesizers.com sequencers than on a Serge sequencer. That's roughly a 2X size difference.
