In the United States: FICA = Federal Insurance Contributions Act. Commonly known as Social Security. In the US we pay a separate tax that amounts to about 7 to 8% of earned income. It provides some income to those retired, some income for disability when one cannot work, and medical care for those over 65 and those that cannot pay. Last I checked, one could not get any good Italian fica with it though.
