The pinout for BC550 / BC560 is: C-B-E if you look on the flat side, with pins looking downwards. Pro: If you look at the transistor from the top, it's shape reflects the schematics symbol. Easy to learn. Con: If you solder the transistor into your circuit backwards, C and E are switched, and you might get strange errors because you still have a working transistor, but with very small current gain. (Harder to test for an error.)
