Well, the article is in somewhat bad taste (the nickname of the person who wrote it is a bit crude), but it's probably worth looking it. It details a serious hackjob for hand-soldering durface mount devices with pin spacings of 0.5mm. It appears to work, but WOW what a hack. Still, it's pretty interesting. http://www.warmcat.com/milksop/soldering.html I'm posting this here because a while ago there was a debate over if we should use SMDs in some of the more wacky kitss or not. This could, theoretically, help (though I'm not sure if this technique would actually work for the more 'friendly' pin spacings).
