RE: [motm] [OT] Wavemakers synthesizer web site

2002-04-05 by John Loffink

I've spent a little bit of time with the 308 Triple Bandpass Filter and
245 Quad VCA. The filter is a very nice configuration, with selection
between bandpass or continuous selection between lowpass, notch and
highpass for each node. In addition it has "lap generators" (scanners)
on the frequency modulation and mix controls, so that adds to the
interest level. At first glance the Quad VCA looks pretty interesting,
but there isn't anything you couldn't do better with the long promised
MOTM 130 Dual VCA, or two of them, at least.

I received a guided tour of the Wavemakers 4. It was desperately in
need of repair, but still had some life in it. This may be the most
powerful pre-patched or patch-over-hard-wire synthesizer ever made.
There was an awesome audio feedback path going one with just three patch
cords. I tried duplicating something similar on my MOTM system and
quickly used up all my multiples and dozens of patch cords. It made me
realize just how useful a matrix mixer would be. I tried duplicating
the patch on the softsynth Reaktor and it crashed. These softsynths
typically cannot handle feedback paths, one more good reason to stay
analog.

Nice work John! I had never even heard of this synth brand before.
Quite a
nice look to it, and no doubt it speaks quality. The blue Wavemaker 4
is a
knockout. The documents are a wealth of info - it's always interesting
to
see another perspective on a user interface. I guess it reminds me a
little
of an EML, with it's large form factor and various knobs. But unlike an
EML, you never see these on ebay! Did you get to use one? If so, what
were
your thoughts?
