a) errr.....(cough cough) diodes ARE on 0.400 lead spaces, same as resistors

b) the caps are on .300 lead spaces because that is the same as the width of the DIP IC packages.
Also, the physical body size of the caps is small, and you want the bends closer to the body.

Also, if you use a standard Mouser-type lead bender tool, there is a "trick" that *perfectly*
bend the leads to .300 centers. Ponder and get back to the list for the solution.
