They make a thing called a uni-bit. (perhaps same as what others are calling
tapered reamer)  They use them a lot at work because they are fast.   Me, I
have a 1" drill bit.  So, I do like Scott said and start small and work my
way up.  But, nice bits int he 3/4 to 1 inch range are about $30 each.  For
just a few, the $45 uni-but will take you a long way.
