This isn't terribly scientific, but if the FM voltage goes below zero, the VCO's phase reverses. I think Juergen refers to this as reversing the spin of the spinning wheel. Sonically - it's a richer, fatter sound. I've built a couple of Thru-zero VCOs from Electronotes. They are definitely worth having!
