The fit is can be extremely tight. I've had it happen on a few kits that I've built too. My solution is to thread the pot into the hole. It will go in pretty easily that way, and by the time you get to the base of the pot, you'll cut "threads" into the paint inside the hole and then you'll just naturally "strip" the threads.
