The exceptions where I use sockets are: 1) The part is something that must be programmed and installed later, like an EPROM or PLD. 2) The part is something expensive, like a CEM3340 chip. 3) I'm replacing a defective part. I'll install a socket for the new one. 4) I'm making a prototype. I typically use turned-pin sockets for digital and analog chips alike. Nickel-plated with usually a gold-plated inner cup.
