Well, if it solves all our portability problems, then yes, it would be
good to do it.

It certainly does not ;-)

automake is as dumb as any other robotic intellect. 
It can do housekeeping job pretty well, but not much
beyond.  Anyway, it works well with all that shared
libraries magic, and it gives you "uninstall" target
which is really nice, and "dist" and "distcheck"
targets that simpliefy making distribution tarballs. 
So I did it anyway.

I'd appreciate if you hold off modifications for
another day or two, so that I could test the result on
a few different systems before sending the diff.
