To answer your first question, the milter-greylist in the directory where I 
create stuff appears to be the same as the one in /usr/local/bin

alan@malander:~/tars/milter-greylist-3.0$ diff /usr/local/bin/milter-greylist 
./milter-greylist
alan@malander:~/tars/milter-greylist-3.0$


alan@malander:~/tars/milter-greylist-3.0$ ls milter-greylist -l
-rwxr-xr-x 1 alan users 255208 2007-01-19 23:54 milter-greylist*
alan@malander:~/tars/milter-greylist-3.0$ ls /usr/local/bin/milter-greylist -l
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 255208 2007-01-20 00:04 /usr/local/bin/milter-greylist*
