Thanks for a great package

Thanks for a great package

2004-07-09 by Scot L. Harris

Implemented milter-greylist on our sever this morning. I just wanted to
say thanks to the developer and others for providing a tool that so far
has blocked approximately a 1000 spam messages just today. Of the two
that go through spamassassin took care of tagging them so they could be
eliminated.

Also one note regarding the installation. Everything installed smoothly
but I did need to change the owner of the /var/milter-greylist directory
to smmsp user. During install this directory was left with root as the
owner. During initial running milter-greylist was unable to write to
the that directory. This was using the 1.4 version of the package so
this may have been fixed in the beta package. Other than that the
install went smoothly.

Thought you would like to know that.

Again thanks for a great implementation of this concept.

Did you do configure --with-user=smmsp ?

Ah! I missed that option. Other than the permissions issue I found
would this change anything else?

BTW: thanks again, the stats I had been collecting on the number of spam
received pretty much flat lined after implementing greylisting. It
exceeded my expectations by several magnitudes.

No, it just sets permissions.

There is always some work about sending abuses and blacklisting once
greylisting is in action to clean up the remaining spam. Afer it is
done, you get less than a spam per day.

Well the initial stats are in. This far exceeds anything I could have
hoped for.

2-Jul 4574 15.6
3-Jul 4890 14.5
4-Jul 3293 13.7
5-Jul 2746 14.6
6-Jul 6481 14.9
7-Jul 6208 15.3
8-Jul 3797 15
9-Jul 3162 14.9
10-Jul 3 13.3
11-Jul 4 9

The stats above show the number of spam received each day and the
average scores for those spam assigned by spamassassin. I implemented
greylisting on Friday. The number of spam dropped from 3000 to 6000 a
day to 3 or 4 a day. And with spamassassin tagging those I think the
problem is well in hand.

Thanks again.

Now I need to start collecting stats on the greylisting process. Does
anyone have a set of scripts to do that already?

There have been some talks behind the scene about adding stat collecting
capabilities to milter-greylist. It's not on the top priority list (the
top priority was to fight spam and it was acheived), but it should show
up some day.
