The portability enhancement are highly desirable., but automake is not a
very exciting path to follow IMO. Is there anything that make impossible
to take the portability add-ons without getting the automake stuff?

I though automake's purpose was only to standardize make targets and
distribution format amongst GNU software. Does it solves more problems
that that?
