Reanimator (about my dead poly800mk2)

Reanimator (about my dead poly800mk2)

2004-07-16 by Júlio César

WOW!!!

Sorry about my bad english, i'm posting this just in case somebody is
having the same problem...

After a long time my poly suddenly died, today I've started packing
it to find a repair shop... I've opened and decide to make a last
try, tweak the tripots a little, and stuff, in the worst case i would
put the screws back in place and bring it to a repair shop... I've
just disconnected the cable from the delay board, then reconected
again... Then the diodes on the other board went warm and glowing
then i thought i lost it for good... But it turned on working like
nothing happened, the display shown the 11 patch, but the patches
were gone... I've just reloaded the patches using the "tape in" and
now it works perfectly...

ive put a cro over the data lines, and signals and clock all appear to
be working, just that chip has no output on the tone lines.

Re: [korgpolyex] Reanimator (about my dead poly800mk2)

It is one toshiba chip that needs to be replaced.
It is mentioned in the service manual should all work but no sound be heard from the poly 800. Its on the main board. The number of the chip is on my schematics . I cant gurentee it but it is in the service notes. apperntly enough of the same prob happend that this was a major note. Im not saying this is or isnt .But Ive bought a few poly 800s and its one or the other chips for the output control to the sound source of the poly 800....
If interested Ill get the part number and email the service note. If you can solder very finely its not a big chip. I dont know if I have a spare im pretty much building up parts to keep for me when this happens again. SinceI have three and I bought some extras let me see what I find out when I look through my parts bin I collect toshiba chips and major processors for the poly .Im now starting to with the juno. I will sale poly 800 keys now and some other stuff .This will also change I bid on every broken one I can find...
Peace
Alien

Re: [korgpolyex] Reanimator (about my dead poly800mk2)

awesome!~
i'd be very keen to find out more.

Mine was dead until i replaced a couple of power transistors in the +/-
5V stage that were buggered, and had been poorly messed with by a
previous owner.
I bought mine for $10 in a carpark junk sale, and took it home,
managed to get the midi control side going so now i can control my
other gear with the poly,

all of the patches etc can be edited stored etc, and i managed to
reload factory settings too, but no sound out.

It looked like the clock and everything was performing properly but no
tone out of the tone generator.

Soldering is easy for me, so if you can point me to the correct
component, i should be able to make it happy again, and that would be
awesome!

thanks again for your info so far.

Service note.If Ic 34 (TCH40H138) fails then no sound will be heard for some or all groups of eight notes. So this would make believe as since it is in the service notes that this is a common flaw of this chip.
It is a toshiba chip. Ic 34 decodes all adresses for the cpu bus line supply. If this doesnt work you are doomed. If you need more info ill break out my parts box and stare at it. But I am unable to let such a valuble chip go man it took me weeks to find. I will look at the place I think I bought them at its a vintage chips sort of giant if they dont have it it dosent exist.I got as many as I could. Of Ic 33 and Ic 34 fail allot. If Ic 34 fail the one voice goes out in the cycle. These are outdated chips commonly made for other stuff.Happy hunting and good luck this is on page six of the schematic for poly 800 vers one repair same deal just added the delay section ...I assume no liabilty or malice this is a suggestion and any damage you do is on your own.
Happy trails

let me know if you got my info on the chip # ic 34 page six of the repair manual for vers one and 2 is the same in this realm. TC40H138 fails there will be no xound heard for some or all of the groups. This seems logical to assume that since all other functions seem working that this would be the answer. When you get it to work I have patches to trade.Good luck

Re: [korgpolyex] Reanimator (about my dead poly800mk2)

2004-07-21 by André Schaap

hi,

If you don't have schematics you can find it here:
http://www.oldcrows.net/~patchell/poly800/poly800.html

ic 34 is responsible for scanning of the keyboard matrix.
So, if you say midi out is ok then this ic is not defective.
If ic34 is defective, you still should have sound when using midi in.

If you have an oscilloscope you can check pins 28 to 36 of ic 3 for tone
output.

This is the sound generator ic.

Please check and report.

BTW, TC40H138 is a very common ic.
If you can't find the toshiba version, there are plenty of other
manufacturers that produce this ic.

Regards,

Andre

Then why does it say on page six that if no sound is heard at all that this is the cause?
I can email the page to you Andre...
Inm just wondering.

Regards,

Andre

As i said ic34 is responsible for scanning the keyboard, so if this ic
is defective, you won't hear a sound. So far the manual is right.
However, since Marcus said midi out is ok, i presume that the keyboard
is working, otherwise you'd have no midi output, except for the sequencer.
Maybe Marcus can reply to confirm this.

English is not my first language , so i hope you understand.
Please send me page 6 and if possible the complete manual.

Andre

I am scanning page six of the real manual and sending.....

Andre Schaap wrote:
As i said ic34 is responsible for scanning the keyboard, so if this ic
is defective, you won't hear a sound. So far the manual is right.
However, since Marcus said midi out is ok, i presume that the keyboard
is working, otherwise you'd have no midi output, except for the sequencer.
Maybe Marcus can reply to confirm this.

English is not my first language , so i hope you understand.
Please send me page 6 and if possible the complete manual.

Andre

well as its a poly800 forum, and about poly800 issues, keeping it a
matter of public record is of service to subscribers i would have
thought,

not as if we are trying to sell monitors or anything....

G'day Andre,

yes the poly midi out works fine, controlling a voce electric piano.

i previously determined there was clock and signal gettting to the tone
generator, but no sound out on its output ports,
so i figured that was the defective port.

best regards,

Marcus
