Strange 800 problem: locked up, display error

Strange 800 problem: locked up, display error

2018-07-26 by zwright88@...

Hi folks,

I have a Poly 800 mk1 that has developed an odd problem.

Upon switching it on, the display reads "1.7 50 01", no sound is able to be produced other than the occasional low frequency click, and none of the buttons are responsive at all. Playing keys will oddly make the value number displayed gradually increase, but the first two numbers remain at "1.7 50"

I'm not able to attempt to re-write the patches from tape since buttons and rear switches are unresponsive, so guessing this is a more serious problem.

Anyone experienced this before? I found only one mention of someone with the same problem online, but there was no answer. Thanks!

I had a similar problem once before. It was an extremely corroded sequencer enable switch.

Hi Don,

Thanks, but I'm not sure that's it. I've opened it up and the sequencer enable switch looks fine, can't see any obvious corrosion or other visible problems on the circuit board.

Although you're probably right in that it has something to do with the sequencer - I just noticed that that hitting the "step" button does cycle the value number up. Also, hitting "cancel" changes the program no. display from 1.7 to 1.8 for some reason, but nothing else is responsive.

Most likely, the problem is with the sequencer enable switch or with
IC33 or IC34.
I would start by checking the switch using a multimeter. If it is not
the switch itself, then replace IC33. If that does not fix it, then
replace IC34.

please check some of the thru hole components.
some of the components radial axials on the ex800 had long lengths ,
so long that the way they were bent could have triggered a short/malfunction

And I would not order them from eBay. Better to get them from a
reputable supplier that is guaranteed to send you working units.

I generally agree; however the first of the two suppliers (littlediode) is
(in my opinion) quite reputable; I've ordered (rare) components there as
well.

On the other hand both IC's are standard so it's no really necessary to pay
premium prices or have them (for the T40H138) shipped from Hongkong.

Yes, those are direct replacements.

Thanks for all the great info, all. Would these two ICs do the trick?

Re: Strange 800 problem: locked up, display error

Hi all, I have an update and a new question:

I replaced IC33, and the original issue with my 800 being completely unresponsive seems to be fixed! However, new problems have appeared.

It's currently behaving like it needs the factory patches re-written: the patches are playing low clicks and white noise. However, the tape write switch doesn't do anything - flipping it to "enable" doesn't make "TAPE" appear like it should, so it's impossible to put it into tape write mode.

Also, the button "3" seems to be unresponsive, as well as a couple of the keys. No idea if this is related to the other issues or not.

Any ideas on where to go from here? Would IC34 possibly be a culprit or is there something else that may need replacing? I still don't think it's an issue with the switch itself as there's no visible corrosion and I'd never had that issue in the past.

Thanks again, this group is an incredible resource!

The "Tape" switch and the '3' keypad button are connected to the same
pin on IC34. So, the most likely problem is with IC34.
The patches are held in a 2K static RAM (6116) that is kept alive
using an onboard CR2032 battery (if present) or by the C cells. So, if
you don't have the onboard backup battery and you don't have C cells
then the patches will disappear every time you turn the unit off.

Hi Mike, thanks for the reply.

I just replaced IC34, but unfortunately the problem is still there with the "3" button and the tape switch not working.

Any other ideas about what to look at? Or is there a way I can narrow down the issue with a multimeter?

I did also just do the internal battery mod (mine was a mk1 with no 2032 present), and that is working great now.

Thanks again!

Have you downloaded the schematics? check them out because that part of
the circuit is quite straightforward.

maybe the circuit board has a fraqctured trace ,
being an issue with non responsive button presses and a tape switch not enguaging..?

You need to trace the line that takes the keypad 3/tape enable/chord
memory button to the chip.
You will need a multimeter set to ohms x1. And then patience to
methodically work your way from the chip through the traces.
And you need to check to make sure that none of the switches on that
line of the XY matrix are shorted. If one of them is shorted then the
switches won't work on that line either.
If this is not something you can figure out with the schematics in
front of you then it might be time to find someone who can do it for
you.
