Distorted Output

Distorted Output

2018-02-04 by bperkins211@...

I have noticed lately that my HAWK800 has massive distortion.

I've isolated it down to the HAWK itself.. not something external like my FX unit, USP audio interface or the like. It will do it to all the patches.

Some odd things I noticed is I can still hear output when I turn the "Master Volume" MIDI CC#7 to Zero. It use to be that it would completely cut all output at Zero.

The distortion is more noticeable when striking a chord vs. a single note.
I try to turn the physical Volume knob down, but it distorts at all volume levels.

I also can turn both the DCO's volumes all the way to zero/off and still get output with Master Volume at zero also..

Is it possible my audio amp has gone bad somewhere?
I think this may have become a progressive issue. It has been noticeable for awhile and gradually got worse.
I think I use to be able to level it out by turning the Actual volume knob down a bit.. but now it's all the time no matter what.
Any ideas???

Thanks

well I managed to poke around inside and turned the VR2 (next to the VCF chip) completely CCW. Or most might say.. I turned it all the way down.

Seems to have removed the distortion entirely.
I guess maybe there's too much DC being applied to the DCO signals going into the VCF chip.

It definitely sounds better.. but I just wonder if I have something else going on and I'm just compensating for it.

Which hardware version of AtomaHawk do you have?Which version of software are you running?

Hi Mike,

I think I got the one out of the first batch of SMT Atomahawk boards you made.
Odd you mentioned it.. I sometimes wondered if there were settings for the Atomahawk board that was causing the distortion.
Tweaking that pot down helped alot though.

The version I am running is the latest, v2.65l

On the AtomaHawk board, check to see if the resistor R2 is a 4K7 ohm and NOT a 1K ohm.
I sent out instructions to everybody explaining that the resistor needed to be 4K7. If it was installed with a 1K ohm, that could be the root of the issue.

I could have sworn I swapped out the 1k for the 4K7. I remember that you mentioned it was needed before I put the atomahawk in.

I noticed the VR2 I turned all the way down is a 4K7 VR.

Next time I crack the keyboard open, I will check in there to verify the update.

For now though, apparently turning VR2 all the way down (max it out at 4K7 resistance) has eliminated the distortion.

Hi Mike,

I also have an overdriven (sounding) output as described in an earlier post in this thread. I finally got time to have a look inside and the value of R2 (4k7) is correct. Any troubleshooting ideas will be appreciated!

Bests,
Jason

P.s. In my case the distortion was also eliminated by turning VR2 all the way down.

Which version of the AtomaHawk kit do you have?
If you have version 1.4, you need to set global parameter 58 to value
1. That version has surface mounted chips.
If you have versions previous to version 1.4, then global parameter 58
needs to be set to value 0.
When you change parameter 58, you have then select a patch and the
hardware will switch over.
Which version do you have and is global parameter 58 set correctly?

I have v1.4, and PG58 has been correctly set to 1 all this time. I do hear the difference between the two values of PG58.
