Random Pitchbend Sound & Midi Events from EX800 (with Hawk & MoogSlayer Mods)

Random Pitchbend Sound & Midi Events from EX800 (with Hawk & MoogSlayer Mods)

2017-09-03 by 4nm6kadee7zdzsxm65oyvgpeyokmlg7czf2bnuoi@...

Hello

I bought a EX800 with Hawk & MoogSlayer -Mods a while ago.

It works ok, but it detunes randomly - and sends those detunes also via pitchbend midi events.

I've read that

a) there might be cables being detached inside - but i can't find anything obvious...

and

b) contact-cleaner might help on a Poly800, but well, the EX800 does not have a physical pitchbend stick..

any suggestions?

would love to finally use this amazing synth!

thanks

d

did active sensing knock out the running status byte of pitch bend?
in the firm wear?
appears to be a consistant time elapse from when pitch bend envoked to time it chokes
????

Here's a video that shows that something inside
the EX800 seems to generate random Pitch Wheel
 Events.
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjUAeDzJ2_M
Those Pitch Wheel Events detune the
synth (problem!) and get sent via Midi also
(don't have a big problem with that).
 Any ideas?

active sencing ..google it ,,, but to my understanding is a pulse...sent every 20ms or so
   sent from some decives...
its a means of preparation for communication between sequencers and synths ....
status byte 254 if im not mistaken

if some devices don't receive this byte they sit dormant and initiate a "open for communication state"
but im not entirely sure ....im just a hack but do love midi protocol ..have studied it over the past 15 years ....

I did notice u had a lot in your rig ,,,,ever try just hooking the korg into a sequencer seeing what happens
when u use a control change via the sequencer?

Hi Charles, thanks for your reply!

The bend-timing seems rather random to me.

Other than that i'm not sure what you mean with
 "active sensing".

But i had to re-install the firmware a few times already,
(as the Hawk-Max4Live-device seems to send a ping of death
sometimes...) and this problem always consisted. :-/

Hi.
i get the same if i only connect a midi keyboard to the midi-in of the HawkEX800.

...even when the midi in is disconnected it still sends those events:

16:12:35.610 From 05 Korg Hawk800 Pitch Wheel 1 -128
16:12:35.610 From 05 Korg Hawk800 Control 1 2 1

16:12:35.652 From 05 Korg Hawk800 Control 1 2 3
16:12:42.372 From 05 Korg Hawk800 Control 1 2 11

Ha, found & fixed the problem!
The global parameter 34 was set to Poly800, not EX800.

34 GL xx - Device type

xx - 0=Poly-800 MK1, 1=EX800, 2=Poly-800 MK2

This parameter must be set according to the type of Poly-800 unit that the HAWK-800 kit is installed in. For the Poly-800 MK1 this parameter should be set to zero. For the EX-800 this parameter should be set to one. In the case of the EX-800, pitch bend control messages and the pitch of the unit itself will not work correctly if this parameter is not set to one.

Just saw this email. Glad you found the answer.
Whenever you upload firmware, the global settings are reset back to default values. So you always have to set global 34 (synth model) and global 58 (AtomaHawk version).
So always check and set global 34 and global 58 after performing a firmware software update.

Hi Mike

thanks for your reply!
If i don't have a atomahawk i can ignore that second setting, right?

Other than that I will do that settings in my sleep soon, as sadly the Max4Live Editor seems to brick my Ex800 sometimes when switching Banks.
Still waiting for a Mac-Vst that controlls the EX800, let's see...

Anyway, amazing synth and amazing mod. Big thanks!

good ,
because my next guess would have been that you have some sort of auto bend feature...

I can rest without concern now.....

 don't panic !!!!! lol

hahaha... same here.
i have also finally stopped the Max4Live device bricking my EX.

Fault seem to have been some corrupt patches in Bank 2 and 3.
I have dumped factory presets there now and re-installed the firmware with a slower speed.
and vola, i don't get error 5 and 6 anymore - and i can use the editor also.

i better stop now, it has been a good day ;-)

If you don't have the AtomaHawk then 58 does not matter. Correct.
