Battery backup mod - and a fault appeared...

Battery backup mod - and a fault appeared...

2012-12-09 by Quazimodo

Hi guys,

I'm new to the group - hello, and hope you don't mind me diving straight in with a question..!?

I have a Poly800 Mk1. I just performed the battery back up mod as outlined on a website I found. Just previous to this I had no sounds in the synth as it was not used for a while and after the mod I reloaded them all to check it out.

But I noticed that on notes played in the lowest octave, (on patches that are programmed 'low') I am getting the top high octave notes breaking through - very quietly in the background. I suspect it is probably there on all patches, but most apparent on the bassier ones...!?

Now, to perform the mod the instuctions told me to remove: C87, C88, D23 and D15 near to where the battery symbol is and where I put my holder.

I am now wondering if this might be the cause as I have just looked in our files section here and there is a battery backup mod that describes a completely different method - removing R1 and D1...!

I would need to take the synth apart and reverse the procedure to see, as it was definitely not doing this last time I used it - and before I performed this mod..!

Could anyone please tell me if this might be a 'fault' that has appeared and is just coincidental?

Many thanks for any help.
Cheers,
TOM

Are you listening on headphones or the main out?

Just checked it on headphones actually. I will listen through an amplifier and see if it's the same.

Thanks for the tip Martin,

Yes, it is much more apparent on headphones. But I'm still convinced it is there on the outputs... but very, very quiet - so not much to worry about at all.

The thing is I have used the synth a lot on headphones before and never noticed it.

Would there be any specific reason for the symptom..?

Cheers,
TOM

RE: [korgpolyex] Re: Battery backup mod - and a fault appeared...

The mod to remove C87, 88 and D15, 23 results in the memory being powered only by the CR2032, even when the synth is powered on, which can reduce the CR2032 battery life. It also reduces C-cell life (if you use them) by leaving a drain through R1 and D1. By removing R1, D1 and soldering the wires over there and leaving the other components in place, the memory is powered by the internal 5V supply when the synth is turned on and by the lithium cell when it is turned off.

Is this one of the original Mk1 with no solder pads where the battery would eventually go, or the in-between one with solder pads but no battery?

In any case, it doesn’t seem like either mod should have any affect on the audio output.

Not sure what would cause this off the top of my head. Headphones are always a lot noisier than the main outs and let digital control noise through because it's a lower quality circuit.
Is the sound all the way through or is it just on the tail of the sound like a kind of reverb, and have you tried it with chorus off/on?

Hey thanks for all the replies guys. Much appreciated.

Yes, Don it is the Mk1 (reverse keys) - but the in-between version with the solder pads and a little battery symbol on the cct board in between them! I think what I shall do is reverse the mod I made (luckily I only cut component legs and can easily re-connect) and I'll do the R1/D1 mod instead. Funny though how I never noticed this top ovtave bleed-through before.

Thanks again,
TOM

Re: Battery backup mod - and a fault appeared...

2012-12-09 by Quazimodo

It's there all the way through Martin. If I start re-programming a patch and turning footages off then the bleed-through disappears! It's mainly the 2ft that does it - but others bleed as well - only an octave lower. And it's definitely not "digital control noise" - but exactly the same as the patch sounds - played up top!

Cheers,
TOM
